In Ho Chi Minh's Footsteps (10 days / 9 nights)

From Hanoi, you will ride South, following the same road Ho Chi Minh took years ago. Wonderful landscapes and historical sites mix perfectly to create a truely remarkable ride.

 

Hanoi - Mai Chau - Vinh - Dong Hoi - Khe Sanh - Hue - Hoi An - Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh

Day 1: Hanoi – Hoa Binh – Mai Chau

In the morning, we start our journey by visiting the Ho Chi Minh Trail museum on the outskirts of Hanoi. Then we saddle up and hit the roacd through a vast agricultural region.  We will be surrounded by green rice paddies and some limestone karst scenery.  We will stop in Hoa Binh for lunch.  In the afternoon, we will cross twon mountain passes that lead to the beautiful Mai Chau valley. Dinner and night spent with the locals in a traditional house near Mai Chau.

Day 2: Mai Chau

After a heartly breakfast, we will spend the day exploring the mountains north of Mai Chau.  We will see H’mong and Dzao villages and see their inhabitants’ lifestyle.  In the evening, we will come back to MaI Chau for dinner.  We will also have a traditional music and dancing perfomance.  Night spent with the locals in a traditional house near Mai Chau.

Day 3: Mai Chau – Vinh

After breakfast, we saddle up and head south on a winding road following the river Ma.  The sights on this road are superb.  We will then reach the new Ho Chi Minh Highway and head due south along the Lao border.  In the afternoon, we will turn and head eastbound by another road to the coastal city of Vinh. Dinner and night spent in Vinh.  

Day 4: Vinh – Phong Nha – Dong Hoi

After breakfast at the hotel, we take Highway 1, the trans-Vietnam highway, towards the south.  After a few miles, we cut west towards the Lao border, crossing the Dong Loc intersectionswhich Vietnamese often consider as the real starting point of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.  The trail will take us through beautiful back country.  The closer we get to the Lao border, the more the limestone karst dominates the scenery.After lunch, we will arrive to Phong Nha, a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Numerous people took cover at Phong Nha to avoid the bombings during the war.  We will then head back to the coast to spend the end of the day in Dong Hoi.  Our hotel will be directly on the sea so we can take some time to relax on the beach!  Dinner and night spent in Dong Hoi.

Day 5: Dong Hoi – DMZ – Khe Sanh

After breakfast, we will continue our drive down south in region still suffering from the torments of the war.  We will see the marks of the Orange Agent used by the Americans as well as numerous bomb craters.  We will cross the famous Hien Long bridge which separated the North from the South in the past.  We will also pass-by the former American base of Khe Sanh, the special forces base of Lang Vie and the Truong Son cemetery. Dinner and night spent in Khe Sanh.

Day 6: Khe Sanh – Hué

In the morning, aftr a heartly breakfast, we will cross the Da Krong bridge, built by the Cubans in 1973 in the sadly famous A Shau valley.  A Shau was the site for intense combat during the war.  We ill also pass next to Hamburger Hill who’s name still carries the memories of death.  We will see hills still desolate from the exposure to the Orange Agent.  We will then arrive at A Luoi where people from the Bru Van hilltribe live.  After crossing remote, but green, regions (finally!), we will go down the impressive Me Oi pass and continue the road to Hué. Hué is a lovely little city with a rich history.  Dinner and night spent in Hué.

Day 7: Hué

Because it is so pretty and interesting, we will spend the whole day exploring Hué and its surroundings.  After breakfast, we will explore the remains of the Imperial Citadel.  In the afternoon, we will take a boat cruise on the perfume River to visit the elegant tombs of the Emperors Khai Dinh and Tu Duc.  Dinner and night spent in Hué.

Day 8: Hué – Hoi An

After breakfast, we go back up the Me Oi pass to return to the Ho Chi Minh Trail.  We will see a lot of people from the To Oi and Co Tu tribes working in the fields.  We will follow the Lao border towards the south just next to an impressive jungle covered mountain..  Once arrived to the little village of Hien, we will leave the trail to go down the Ba Na mountain range towards Hoi An, one of the UNESCO’s World Heritage sites.  Dinner and night spent in Hoi An.

Day 9: Hoi An

The whole day is spent to discover Hoi An.  In the morning, after breakfast, we will take a walking tour of the old town.  After lunch, free time for personnal exploration of the city.  With a lot of history, countless shops, a superb beach and amazing food, you will have a lot to choose from.  Dinner and night spent in Hoi An.

Day 10: Hoi An – Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi

After breakfast, the morning is again free.  After lunch, tranfer to the Da Nang airport (30km in private transfer) to take the flight to the destination city of your choice.  Flight to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh.
