Traveling accross Vietnam by train is a very nice. Though it doesn't go very fast - to go from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh Ville by the Express train take 30 hours to give you an example - you will see the beautiful Vietnamese countryside in depth. Without being of the most luxurious standards, the trains will definetly be considered to be an exotic experience! Here is a map of all the tracks in the country:

From Hanoi to Lao Cai (Sa Pa):
There are various companies assuring this line. Tulico, Ratraco, Royal and Pumpkin to name a few. All offer similar accomodations and the same type of services. Here is a picture of a VIP cabin aboard a Tulico car.
For this ride, we warmly recommend you take the Night train.
*** There is also possibility to travel aboard the luxurious Victoria cars, but to travel aboard them, you MUST stay at least one night at the Victoria Sa Pa Resort!
On this line there are only governemental trains. We recommend you take the Express trains if you plan to cross the whole country. That way, the train doesn't stop at every station!
The Express trains leave every day
- from Hanoi at 7:00pm (train # SE1) and 11:00pm ( train # SE3)
- from Ho Chi Minh at 7:00pm (train # SE2) and 11:00pm (train # SE4)
